Custom combined Bordeaux and Cognac trip with 4 Norvegian

On Wednesday, May 10, 2017, I had the pleasure to welcome once again Ingolf and his friends from Bergen in Norway to discover the secrets of Bordeaux wines and new familial distilleries in the heart of Cognac. 4 beautiful days under the sign of discovery and conviviality!

Wednesday 10 May 2017: Through Bordeaux streets and local delicacies

Welcome at the airport of Mérignac. After the declaration of the lost luggage, direction Bordeaux. Bordeaux, "the sleepy beauty" and its elegant buildings from the XVIIIth century .... After a lunch at Nulle Part Ailleurs brasserie, departure for a nice walkfrom the Quinconces square. Then comes the Place de la Comédie and the magnificent Grand Théâtre, Place du Parlement, the Place de la Bourse and the cathedral district. Of course, we had great tastings on the way such as Hasnaa chocolate factory and a few Dunes Blanches (cream puffs celebrating the highest sand dune in Europe) on the terrace on Camille Jullian square. In short, very beautiful afternoon!

Thursday 11 May: Discover the Right Bank of Bordeaux vinyards and Saint Emilion

To the assault of the right bank! Departure for the village of Saint Emilion and its beautiful medieval monuments. My 4 Norwegian friends are subjugated by this gigantic monolithic church, the largest in Europe! I had prepared a small surprise: Meet Marc Lassègues at the Chateau La Fleur Picon to get acquainted with the merlot grapes of Saint Emilion.

Then, tapas lunch at the Chateau Boutinet with our hosts Nathalie and Jerome that we no longer introduce here. Not to mention the star of the day, our friend Jericho, the St. Bernard of the property. After this pleasant snack, we drove to the Côtes de Bourg where we are expected at the Chateau Mercier. Isabelle, the owner, waited for us to initiate them to the different wines of their production. Tasting of the futures from the barrel and tasting several wines including their new baby: a Blaye-Côtes de Bordeaux, 100% Merlot aged in amphoras!

Friday 12 May: Through the family distilleries of Grande Champagne

Departure to Cognac. The morning was devoted to a beautiful meeting and superb tasting at the Cognac Raymond-Ragnaud. Great vintaged Cognac, some Folle Blanche and wonderful old Cognacs!

Then direction the small but exciting familial house of Cognac : Dudognon. Completely independent and still distilling on natural fire! It was that day that my way crossed that of the great collector Michel-Jack Chasseuil passing through Cognac to change corks of very old cognacs! What an unexpected meeting and what a charming man and accessible person!

After having visited one of their ageing cellars, we finish this day in the superb lounge of the Fillioux family  :  Cognacs Jean Fillioux . A very nice meeting with Mr Fillioux who will leave beautiful lasting memories of our 4 friends, always impressed by the time that we give to welcome them and let them discover our region!
