4 australian couples from Adelaide touring Bordeaux wineries

Wednesday April 25, 2017 :  we had a meeting point in Blaye to take advantage of the farmer’s market. This group of 4 Australian couples from Adelaide was staying at Château Couffins on the banks of the Dordogne river.

After a walking tour through the citadel of Blaye and having unlocked the mysteries behind the organisation of Vauban’s defensive system, we left in minivan to discover the Corniche of the Gironde and the charming fisching huts on stilts...

Passing by  the Gallo-Roman villa of Plassac, the underwater mine dating back to WWII and the picturesque port of La Roque-de-Thau or the troglodytic houses of Marmisson ...

Arrived in Bourg sur Gironde at around 2:30 pm, we were very pleasantly welcomed at the restaurant Le Plaisance despite our late arrival ...

Then head towards the vineyards of the Côtes de Bourg for a visit to the Château Haut Guiraud, where received by the owners Nathalie, Christophe and their son for a great wine tasting of the full range of wines from their wineries.

Day 2: Friday, April 28, 2017

Departure from Château Couffins towards Libourne. What a sad spectacle everywhere ! Cold water has been poured on the hopes of the harvest to come !  Passing by the hillsides of the Cubzagais towards Libournais, the vines are nothing but desolation following the frost of the night of 26 to 27 April. Silence in the car facing this sad spectacle!

Heading to the market of Libourne where we tasted some seasonal fruits and vegetables including little beans called « Fève » that intrigued them and the emblematic french cheese called mimolette.

Short cultural stop at the Fine Arts museum of Libourne which really delighted them! It is funny to observe the sensitivities of one and the other; while I had spoken about the Jordaens portrait or of the XVth century Nottingham English alabasters, they were in ecstasy in front of Duffy’s paintings!

Then lunch atChâteau Boutinet with Nathalie and Jérôme. They also lost 90% of their upcoming crop because of the frost but received us warmly with an assortment of tapas and grilled  duck breast paired with the wines of the property. Perfect setting for rare moments of sharing and great memories to bring back to Australia!

Then drive to St Emilion to visit the medieval village ... They loved the spirituality that emanated from the special atmosphere in Saint Emilion (especially noticeable when thousands of tourists have not arrived yet!). We visited the underground monuments and the large monolithic church left them speechless ! Then return on the banks of the Dordogne after a busy day.

I am so delighted to have met Annette and her friends from Adelaide, absolutely charming people who came here for real exchanges with us, the locals.

They had to face a flat tire on their rental car, struggle with an ATM which swallowed a card on the weekend of May 1 (the most famous bank holiday in France), a medical prescription forgotten at home ... All of this with a smile when others would have been very disagreeable.

Meeting such nice and interesting people is certainly the main reason why I love my job as a guide!

Marie is the most wonderful & exceptional tour guide! From our first email contact she was welcoming & extremely helpful...
